Welcome to GMA
The Gambia, the smallest country in mainland Africa, relies significantly on its maritime sector for economic activities, particularly centered on the Port of Banjul. Established by an act of parliament in 2006, the Gambia Maritime Administration (GMA) is responsible for regulating the maritime industry, ensuring the safety of life at sea, and protecting the marine environment. Our mandate includes the welfare of Gambian seafarers, the registration of Gambian ships, and fulfilling both Port State and Flag State duties. Through the enforcement of International Maritime Organization (IMO) Conventions and national legislation such as the Merchant Shipping Act 2013 and the Marine Pollution Act 2013, the GMA is committed to upholding international standards in safety, security, and environmental protection. Despite capacity challenges, the GMA remains a pivotal advocate for the maritime industry, continually working with partners to advance The Gambia's maritime sector.
GMA has organised a two-day training and sensitization workshop for media practitioners on the mandate of the Administration as per the Gambia Maritime Administration Act 2006
